It’s official! The MGH inaugural cohort is now certified in STR Global’s Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA). Thank you to Mr. Steve Hood, Senior VP of Research at STR, who took the time to travel to Houston and train the Master’s students over an intensive two-day training session. According to STR’s website,

The certification is based upon four core content areas:

  • Hotel Math Fundamentals – the metrics used by the Hotel Industry
  • Property Level Benchmarking (STAR Reports)
  • Hotel Industry Performance Reports (Trends, P&L, Pipeline, and Destination Reports)

STR, the leading provider of data and research for the hospitality industry, has been involved with the Master of Global Hospitality Business cohort since the first semester at Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne. STR collects data from over 50,000 hotels across more than 160 countries and produces the industry-renowned STAR reports and other competitive benchmarking materials for hotels.

Now with the latest addition of the Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) from STR, the MGH candidates have now obtained three certifications over the course of 16 months, including SnapShot‘s Hotel Demand Management at EHL and HVS‘s Hotel Market Study and Valuation at PolyU’s SHTM.

Capstone In-Residence Update from Team Hilton!

Capstone Company: Hilton Worldwide
Team Members:
Francesco Corbo, Ha Thi Khanh Ngo, Kristina Park
Location:
McLean, Virginia, U.S.A.

“The capstone in-residence period has proved to be an intensive and rewarding summer for Team Hilton at the Hilton Worldwide headquarters in McLean, Virginia. While continuing to work on our capstone project, we have also been integrated into the official Hilton summer internship program with 40 other undergraduate and graduate student interns across all corporate departments. Being placed at the heart of one of the largest and most widely-recognized hotel companies in the world has been an exhilarating experience as we are able to witness how the company conducts its business worldwide from its core. While working alongside the 800 employees situated in the McClean offices, on top of the countless other Hilton team members from around the world coming in and out of the headquarters for meetings and events, we have had the opportunity to meet and learn from hospitality industry experts on a daily basis.

Not only have we been able to make great progress on our capstone project, focusing on Hilton’s Huanying program – a customized service for Chinese guests offering additional amenities to better their Hilton experiences – but we have also been placed into three teams: Brand Operations, Brand Sales, and Brand Performance Support. Each student has thus been exposed to a different business line and its role within Hilton’s business operations and assigned other tasks throughout the summer program as a part of the internship program. As Hilton interns, we have been invited to attend company events including summer barbecues, Chris Nassetta’s team member Crab Feast 2016, a National’s baseball game, and the Washington Hilton’s Hotel Immersion. The summer in-residence period has given us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become Hilton team members and has allowed us to have an insider’s perspective into the company, which will ultimately benefit our capstone project in the long run.”

Capstone Company: Dusit International
Team Members:
Magali Castells Viñals, Filip Schmidt
Location:
Bangkok, Thailand

“Dusit International is a well-respected Thai hotel group that is renowned for its rich history, outstanding Thai hospitality, and gracious services. The group is currently operating 27 properties in 9 countries around the world and has officially announced the opening of 50 new properties in the coming years.

As Buddhism plays a central role in the culture of Dusit International, the company places a strong emphasis on the field of education to support the local community. As expressed by the company founder Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, “If Thailand is to be among the world’s leaders in the hospitality industry, the education and training of staff would be of the most importance.”

Dusit International has an Education division that runs two reputable colleges, three culinary schools, and one vocational school. Dusit Education plans to expand into different markets to answer the demand of the industry and sustain the future growth of the hotel group.

During our capstone in-residence period we worked close together with the Education division of Dusit International. Having a capstone partner that is directly related to the Dusit family enabled us to access internal information and develop connections with the different departments. Thanks to conversations with members of the executive team, we were able to fully understand the vision of the company and see the potential of Dusit Education to sustain the future growth of the Dusit International. Our project is divided in the following two objectives:

  1. Integrate the educational division as a main driver of Dusit International’s future growth strategy
  2. The conceptualization and operational development of an integrated hotelschool in Manila, Philippines.

Additionally, we had the chance to attend several hotel investment and hospitality education conferences such as APacCHRIE and APHIC, to learn more about the current trends in the ASEAN region. We also used this opportunity to meet industry participants and learn from their passions and working experiences in Asia.

Besides spending time at the office, our capstone partner really encouraged us to travel and discover Thailand. Although Bangkok is amazing, we followed his advice and spent most of our weekends outside of the city in places, including Amphawa, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Koh Tao, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Lipe

Due to the diversity of backgrounds within our capstone team, we have been able to see the project from various perspectives. By combining our knowledge and experiences, we were able to fully integrate with the company and understand the hospitality educational industry that we were not previously familiar with. At first, the project took each of us out of our comfort zones, but ultimately enabled us to grow personally and professionally.

We are very much looking forward to finalizing our project and delivering qualitative recommendations that can directly be implemented to support the sustainable growth of Dusit International.”

“Working at the AccorHotels UK office has been a truly enriching experience so far. When we first began our in-residence period at the UK office a little over a month ago, the entire team warmly welcomed us to the office and we have grown to become a part of the Accor family since then. It has been an incredible experience to work with one of the biggest hotel companies in the world, as there is always a new project being initiated somewhere! We have been able to see how the global corporation is managed and to be members of a team who is always eager to help us and challenge us at the same time. Not only have we been attending our e-commerce team’s weekly meetings and interacting with various departments, but we have also been able to progress with our Capstone project and conduct research independently. This in-residence period for our Capstone Project is allowing us to learn something new every day and to utilize the tools we have been taught during this Master’s program in real-life industry situations. Our experience at Accor Hotels will definitely be a long lasting memory for the three of us and we are very excited for the next few months to see what results our project will yield.”

See you later, Hong Kong.

As the second semester of the 3continents3semesters journey has come to an end with the wrapping up of the term at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management, it is time to say goodbye to the city that has grown to become my new home during the course of the last four months. From the first day of orientation to the last day of final exams, Hong Kong has grown to occupy a large part of my heart and a place I hope to call home again one day.

While I was able to discover Hong Kong through exploring the city outside of the classroom, I was also given the incredible opportunity to immerse myself into the rapidly growing hospitality industry of Hong Kong and its surrounding Asian regions through the opportunities provided exclusively through the Master’s program. With site tours of a large variety of hotels in the city, lectures from hotel leaders from the local Hong Kong and entire Asia Pacific market, who were often alumni of PolyU or EHL, and teachings provided from professors and visiting lecturers at PolyU, we were completely involved with the entire industry of Hong Kong’s hospitality market.

image2 (1)

At the Hong Kong PolyU’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management, our classes included – Quality Service Management, Marketing Management, Hospitality Business Strategies, and Revenue Management – in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry, with a focus on Asia. The courses taught us about the industry from hands-on projects and real-life case studies and allowed us to apply our knowledge of the market to our academic work. One project included a revenue management simulation where students were required to act as various managerial positions to improve the current situation of an underperforming hotel using tactics learned from the course, as well as from external market information.

Not only did we learn about Hong Kong’s hospitality environment from our courses, but we were also able to get a glimpse of the hotel industry of mainland China through the Hospitality Business Strategies in Asia: China Hotel and Tourism Business Studies course, which included a Business Field Trip to China’s Beijing and Shanghai.

image6

The Business Field Trip in China was a major highlight of the semester as it exposed us to a great variety of aspects of the hospitality industry of China from both domestic and international players. The six-day trip included many visits to the corporate offices of hotel companies, such as InterContinental Hotel Group, site tours of hotels from the luxury five-star sector, boutique hotels, and the rapidly growing budget hotel sector, like the Ritz-Carlton Pudong, Hotel Indigo on the Bund, the Emperor Beijing Hotel, and Home Inn, respectively, and opportunities to experience the hotels from guests’ perspectives. As students of the industry, we are constantly learning about the business of hotels and their strategies from the perspective of management, owners, and investors, so it was particularly interesting to be able to experience the hotels in China as guests for a change. The guest experience gave us the full experience of the hotels and their unique services and a better understanding of the industry overall.

image4

As I depart Hong Kong to continue on to the next chapter of the Master of Global Hospitality Business journey, I leave a part of myself behind with the city, but also with the new addition of many valuable experiences and lasting memories. With my newly acquired knowledge from the past semester, I am eager to begin my capstone in-residence period, of which I have been preparing for since the first semester of the Master’s program at EHL. For now, I will have to say another bittersweet “See you later” to Hong Kong, as I did with Switzerland a few months before, only to say “Hello” to Hilton Worldwide in McLean, Virginia and the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College in Houston, Texas, as our exciting 3continents3semester adventure continues.

Be the EHL spirit – An evening with the EHL Stamm Hong Kong Chapter

Standard

March 30, 2016 – It’s difficult to believe that, in a blink of an eye, the Master of Global Hospitality Business’ semester in Hong Kong will be approaching its end. Reflecting back, one of the greatest highlights of our second term has been the EHL Stamm event of the EHL Alumni Hong Kong Chapter.

Held on Monday, March 7, at the Repulse Bay Hotel, where the bi-laws of the Stamm were originally signed back in March of 1997, the event was kindly hosted by Mr. Claudio De Villemor Salgado – the Stammvatter, Mr. Philipp Blaser and Ms. Joyce Lam. Around 70 EHL members gathered together for a delightful evening of excellent company of alumni from 1979 to 1982, a new set of current EHL student interns, current MGH students, and Hong Kong alumni fellows.

12794647_1124268167624281_5916545486617249796_o

What an evening it was! The atmosphere was absolutely enthralling and the event was MGH’s first opportunity to meet with EHL alumni in Asia.

It is always a privilege to meet fascinating people who have had such a diverse assemblage of life paths and experiences, yet who all have the EHL spirit in common – with infinite tales to impart, from the renowned “Santé” to memories of EHL student life to how we all arrived and departed from Chalet-à-Gobet.

If the law of attraction is the most powerful law in the world, a strong connected community like the EHL Alumni family with a collective energy and shared values could be one of the most potent advocates to one’s growth and success. It is no exaggeration to say that EHL Alumni’s legacy of support, gratitude, and virtuous cycle bestows on us the courage to pursue our dreams and to make a difference in the future.

“Be the EHL spirit and let the EHL spirit be you,” shared an alumna, who flew all the way from New York to join the event. “The EHL family is a community unparalleled in achievements and support – as life will send us to unexpected places with remarkable opportunities.”

Our MGH journey is quickly racing by us and it is incredible to reflect on how much we have already experienced on two completely different continents, and how much we are about to gain through our Capstone Consulting Projects and next semester in the United States. How grateful we are to be on this MGH roller coaster ride because being a part of something special truly does make you special.
